As an architecture lover, I always try to take the opportunity to view prominent homes that come on the market. I am lucky to be a Pasadena Realtor because I get to tour special properties designed by prominent architects like Paul Williams, Frank Lloyd Wright, Greene and Greene, Wallace Neff, Myron Hunt, and Reginald Johnson. The presence of these beautifully designed homes (whether big or small) sets our area apart as truly unique and special.
Yesterday provided me the unique opportunity to see a phenomenal La Canada Flintridge home for sale at 800 Inverness, designed in 1983 by the renowned architecture firm Buff & Hensman. Nestled up in the wooded Flintridge section of town, the home is meticulously maintained in its original condition. The family-friendly floor plan, with an ultra-private master retreat on the second floor, is calling out for a new owner to love and enjoy it.
Although there was a valet available to shuttle me, I chose to hike the extremely long driveway up to the house. The winding path led me through a portion of the over 4-acre wooded lot. By the time I reached the house, I felt as if I was miles away from the city, and was filled with a sense of serenity and delight. The home has been beautifully staged and shows to perfection. It features simple lines, with the ample windows playing the prominent role in the design. The house seems to morph with its surroundings, especially in the spectacular living room with vaulted ceilings and towering windows.
Prolific designers who created hundreds of homes between 1950 and 2000, Buff & Hensman were uniquely able to evolve with changing architectural trends, staying relevant over an extended period of time. According to the company’s website:
The beauty of their work comes from attention to the large and small elements that make a house a fine personal experience for the owner. Starting with understanding what a lot has to offer, and taking full advantage of it. They were magicians at making a lot open and private, whether it really was or not by strategic placement of the house and use of structural planes as foils and baffles which were enhanced with expanses of glass.
An early associate of the firm, Dennis Smith ultimately took over as President in 1997 and continues to run the firm to this day. Part of his work involves restoration of some of the classic Buff & Hensman homes scattered around the area. Owners who utilize his services are blessed to work with someone who understands the intent of the original design. Bringing a modern take to these historic gems, Smith is extending the influence of this extraordinary firm.
The details on 800 Inverness are as follows:
